Roofing in Yennora

A small suburb with a very large roof

Yennora is split. The residential part sits in the Fairfield council area, and the industrial land to the west falls under Cumberland. That industrial land includes the Yennora Distribution Centre, a rail-connected freight and warehousing site covering around 300,000 square metres.

The railway siding opened in 1927, the public school in 1955, and the wool stores in 1971. The houses mostly date from the decades in between, and Fairfield Road Park sits on the banks of Prospect Creek at the edge of the suburb.

Houses

The residential pocket is small and mostly post-war detached housing. These roofs need what every roof of that age needs:

• Ridge and hip caps rebedded and repointed, because the original mortar is finished
• Broken and slipped tiles replaced
• Rusted valley trays replaced
• Flashings redone where a rear room, patio or carport was added later
• Gutters replaced, falls corrected and downpipes added where the roof needs them

Living beside a freight and distribution precinct also means airborne grit. Grit collects in gutters and valleys, holds water against the metal, and shortens the life of both. Regular clearing is worth more here than in a quiet cul-de-sac.

Warehouse and distribution roofs

Large sheet roofs on the industrial side fail at the details: internal box gutters that silt up and overflow inside, brittle rooflights, hardened screw washers, and corrosion at cut edges and laps.
